As Central Florida's resident orchestra, The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra appears in more than 125 performances every season. The Philharmonic strives to promote symphonic music through educational events, performances, and cultural leadership. The orchestra is entering its 20th year season this year. Christopher Wilkins will be conducting the show under the direction of Robert Swedberg. Brian Jagde will take on the role of Pinkerton, while the legendary soprano Shu-Yung Li reprises her EMMY award-winning role as the lovely and vivacious Cio-Cio San. Li was born in Shandong, China and won the EMMY for her performance with the New York City Opera. In a few short years, Ms. Li has become the most coveted voice in Puccini's Madame Butterfly in North America. The story revolves around a Pinkerton, a young U.S. Navy officer and a young Japanese woman named Cio-Cio. The two marry, but the officer immediately abandons her and takes the hand of an American woman. Unbeknownst to Pinkerton, Cio-Cio gives birth to his son. Upon returning to Japan, she goes great lengths to ensure that Pinkerton does his part in raising the boy. The opera comes to a tragic end, but not until audience members have been graced with beautiful music, exquisite acting, and wonderful storytelling.
